Why the energy bill matters

Pakistan imports most of its crude oil and a growing share of its energy as LNG. When global oil prices spike, the petroleum group can swell by billions of dollars within months — which is exactly what drove the record $41 billion trade deficit in FY2021–22, and what policymakers watch most closely every month.
